Key Network Actors

The LayerDrone Protocol seeks to coordinate an array of actors that comprise the earth imagery industry today and what it could be in the future.
Pilots are the workhorses of the network. Using off-the-shelf drones, they can rapidly capture high-resolution imagery on demand. Pilots can take many forms in real life, whether long-time drone hobbyists, enthusiasts newly getting into drones to participate in the network, or existing companies with their own pilots and drone fleets. It’s anticipated that pilots may vary region to region and country to country, based on different regulations, local markets for imagery, and the community for drones.
Direct Data Buyers and Value-added providers (VAPs) purchase imagery wholesale from the network to create products and services using it. They could use tokens to access imagery, subject to standard resale restrictions. VAPs may take many forms, including smaller drone companies that only want local data or massive data companies seeking fresh and ultra-high-resolution imagery data. Spexi Inc., a drone technology company and the founding core contributor to the LayerDrone Network, is the first VAP, turning raw imagery into geospatial intelligence and interactive panoramas for its clients.
Requesters can create and sponsor missions for image capture at any time. In some cases, the imagery in the system itself might be out of date or unsuitable for specific use cases. For example, certain entities may want fresh imagery after a natural disaster such as a forest fire or after major construction projects have been completed. In practice, direct data buyers, VAPs, and clients of VAPs all may serve as requesters.
The LayerDrone Foundation will perform many technical and governance functions at the launch of the public tokenized network. Sections below discuss the details of the technology powering the network and the key decisions handled via various governance processes. The Foundation intends that over time, many functions initially administered by the Foundation will be assumed by different, potentially new, network actors.
